This water taxi’s next stop: your Christmas Tree

No visit to Vancouver is complete without a ride on a water taxi!

These iconic ferries were the inspiration for my 2021 Vancouver Christmas Ornament design: a red and white water taxi!

As a local, I’ve enjoyed the spectacular views they provide, transporting our kids (and often visiting friends) along False Creek from English Bay and Yaletown to Granville Island, Science World and points between.

I’m also captivated by the water taxi ballet put on by False Creek Ferries every year on Canada Day and just before the fireworks celebrations in late July and early August. The choreography is amazing! Their repertoire includes Figure 8s, crossovers and starbursts to name a just a few. We love watching them as we wait for the fireworks to begin. One year we even scored a perfect viewing spot on the Burrard Bridge.

What makes this water taxi ornament special?

This adorable ornament is fashioned after the particular ferries designed by marine architect Jay Benford and used by both Aquabus and False Creek Ferries in Vancouver and at Fisherman’s Wharf in Victoria.

For my design, I wanted to make sure you could see through the glass windows of the ornament, and am particularly pleased with the little resin life preserver on top! The ornament measures about 4 inches long, 2.5 inches tall, and 1.75 inches wide, featuring a red metallic hull and a glossy white top with gold, navy and blue accents.

This cutie will be an annual reminder on my Christmas tree of those fun family times.

Maybe it’ll do a little ferry ballet on your tree, too.
